THE LOCKED ROOM Were twelve art students really locked in a room together for entire days, each with only a two foot cube of white polystyrene for materials? In 1969, four tutors at St Martin's School of Art initiated a new sculpture course (later designated the 'A' Course) in which students were placed in a locked studio with only their materials. The studio was locked it seems not so much to keep people in as to lock the world out. As one former student described it : ‘The door was locked, but the bolt was on the inside …’. Nor were they permitted to speak to their tutors other than to receive permission to leave the studio. They worked within a prescribed set of hours but never knew when their work was complete or whether it would still be in the studio on their return

Encountering time - the 'materials' project

There has been much talk amongst us of the 'Materials' project being a raw encounter with stuff . And many of us seem to have adopted this in our art practice: the unfolding process of working through stuff. Being in conversation with it as John Crossley once said. I did take that away with me, but even more so it was an encounter with bare unvarnished time. Peter Kardia Remembered

Peter Kardia died at his home in Dorset, England on Friday 3rd May 2019. Those who knew him will always remember him: his natural authority and self-confidence made him a powerful figure to his students, his colleagues, his friends and anyone who had the temerity to stand in his way. He was renowned as a teacher who brought a very different pedagogy into art education from the 1960s onwards with his innovative courses, particularly at St Martin’s and The Royal College of Art in London. As a founder of the celebrated ‘A Course’ at the St Martin’s Sculpture Department in 1969, he was part of a small team whose teaching was unorthodox and controversial, including ‘The Locked Room’ projects which were featured in the influential 1973 BBC Omnibus documentary ‘A Question of Feeling’. Peter’s career as a teacher was also marked by the exhibition ‘From Floor to Sky’ which he curated in 2010 at the Ambika P3 gallery in London and featured works by 28 artists who had been his students at St
